Sports Shot puts athlete on the podium Sylvia Cole, Carstairs Courier
Sixteen-year-old athlete Zach Elliot of Cremona won bronze during the Summer Games last week in Peace River.
Elliot placed in U17 male shot put with a 12.01-metre throw.
“At first my friend and I walked up to people we thought were throwing and they looked really scrawny,” he said. “But then we realized they were just people watching the event and the ones we were up against were a lot bigger. Our confidence dropped a little,” said Elliot, laughing.
Elliot, who was up against 15 other competitors said his first two throws weren’t the strongest and he felt a little nervous with the final throw which landed him the third place title.
“It felt pretty good. I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen,” he said. Elliot started track at high school at Olds Koinonia when his coach asked him to try out for the event.
“I think I’ll train a lot more next year and try and do better at the county meet,” said Elliot who’s no longer eligible to play again in the Summer Games. “You have to be under 17 and it only happens every two years so I’ll be done by then,” he said.
“I was definitely pretty stoked, it was good to go out there and meet other people.”
Also bringing home a title from the week is Carly Heath placing first for female volleyball beach tournament. Nathaniel Cross from Carstairs is still in Peace River this week finishing basketball competitions. He placed first for the U15 male long jump and for U15 male high jump as well as 4th for male 4x100-metre relay. Tyler Jensen from Carstairs won 4th for U17 male high jump and javelin throw.
