1946 - 2024

Kristine Smith, passed away peacefully, with her family at her side, at the Red Deer Hospice, Red Deer, AB on February 25, 2024, at the age of 78 years.

She was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 13, 1946, to ranchers, Harold and Idene Block of Kathryn, AB,  and eventually moving the farm to Standard. Kristine attended Olds College and then the University of Alberta completing her degree in Home Economics.

While at university she met Gary Smith of Wimborne, and they were married November 27, 1971.  Kristine enjoyed raising their family as partners of Poplar Haven Farms. In 1999, Gary and Kristine established NuHaven Cattle Co. and relocated to Pine Lake, AB. Kristine enjoyed her careers in home economics and events planning for Westerner Park and the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce. She was truly a partner with Gary in his livestock exporting business, looking after things at home and providing sound, thoughtful advice. Kristine was known for her honesty, resiliency, and strong nature, especially while enduring a long battle with cancer. She was known as a great cook, an avid reader, discussing politics, and hosting friends at the fishpond she and Gary built.

Kristine will be forever remembered and sadly missed by her children Guy and Emily Smith, Kelly and Scott Fraser. Her pride and joy were, her grandchildren Brayden, Taylor, and Tilden Smith, Becca, Jillian, and Aubrey Fraser. Her brother Jess Block, sister and brother-in-law Andrea and Walton VanDyke.  Her Sisters-in-law Cleo Ross, Donna Bennett, and Annette Smith as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial drop in social will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Pine Lake Hub Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Summer Synergy Setting Sails scholarship fund through the Olds Regional Exhibition or a charity of your choosing.
