PENNER
Benjamin Hamm Penner, a 63 year resident of the Mountain View County, died peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary on December 18, 2009 at the age of 70, from the ravages of Alzheimer's. Ben's life was focused on God, family, and community. A significant part of Ben's life was serving his Lord. He taught Sunday school at all the churches he attended. He loved singing in quartets. He gave his full energy to church expansion at the Church of God and at Deer Valley Meadows Camp. During the last nine years the Gideon ministry was very dear to his heart. He immensely enjoyed presenting Grade 5 students with their little red Testament. Ben is survived by his wife Vicky and two children: his daughter Leslie and husband Gordon Johnson and their sons Connor and Reilly of Carstairs, and his son Warren and wife Leanna and their daughters Alisha, Jessica and Natasha from Richmond, BC. He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters and over 50 nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, six brothers and two sisters. The extended family was always important to him, and Ben enjoyed a close relationship with them. He married Vicky Veenstra in 1962 while both taught at Sundre. During his teaching career, he also taught in Carstairs for 12 years. In 1976 Ben changed his occupation from teacher to operating a gravel business that evolved into dozer cat work. In 1989 he was elected as a County Councillor. He loved serving the people in his division for 15 years. Benjamin Hamm Penner was born on January 26, 1939 on a farm north of Herbert, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of the 15 children born to Jacob and Helena Penner. Ben grew up on the farm east of Carstairs on the Rosebud Coulee. Ben attended country schools at Davenport and New Bergthal. High school years were in Carstairs and at Prairie Bible Institute. Ben then attended U of C for teacher training and began his teaching in Sundre at the age of 19. The family greatly appreciates the loving care he received, first in Didsbury Long-term care and then at Bethany Care Centre in Calgary. Memorial tributes may be made to the Gideons International of Canada to further the impact of the gospel around the world. Memorial services were held Wednesday December 23, 2009 at Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church, Carstairs. Arrangements in care of SUNSET FUNERAL SERVICE Linden 403-546-3903.
