Mountain View County building permit values topped $43 million in 2023

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Building permits for projects worth $43 million were issued by Mountain View County in 2023, including $37 million for residential projects, according to statistics presented at the recent council meeting.

Margaretha Bloem, director of planning and development, outlined the 2023 planning and development service and service level report, which also included an update on recent department projects.

There were 961 permitting applications in 2023, compared with 935 in 2022. Of last year’s permits, 240 were for buildings, 312 for electrical, 222 for gas, 92 for plumbing and 92 for sewage.

A total of 128 fine tickets were issued, including 56 under the dog bylaw, 42 for land use, and eight for unsightly premises.

In all, 240 building permits were issued, including 22 for commercial, eight for industrial and 207 for residential projects.

A total of 342 planning applications were made last year, compared with 408 in 2022. Of last year’s applications, 118 were discretionary, 98 were permitted, three were for events, two were for resignations, and seven were for subdivisions.

Regarding ongoing department projects, Bloem reported that the Water Valley Winchell Lake area structure plan steering committee is currently discussing public engagement methods and will be having the public hearing on March 26.

The Olds-Didsbury Airport area structure plan review is now undergoing a final draft of changes before a public hearing is scheduled.

Council received the department report as information, with all councillors in attendance.
