INNISFAIL - Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning Monday morning for the Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail - Stettler area.

The federal agency said rain will begin Monday, May 6 and continue through Tuesday night. Heavy rain is expected tonight and Tuesday.

"Widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 70 (millimetres) are likely. Locally higher amounts of 80 mm or more are possible. Rain will taper off on Wednesday," the warning states.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

The warning includes Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail and Bowden.
