Kerry Meyers' rink wins men's bonspiel
The hometown boys brought home curling glory last weekend, during the Carstairs Community Curling Club’s Men’s Bonspiel. The Kerry Meyers rink of Carstairs won the A Event. Meyers was joined by Paul Wiebe as Third, Darren Meek as Second and Dan Sowerby as Lead.
“All the semifinals and finals in each event were very close games,” said Jerry Roberts, spokesman for the Carstairs Curling Club. “The Kerry Meyers rink from Carstairs won the bonspiel with a thrilling last rock ‘Come Around Takeout.’”
The B Event was won by the Jim Peterson rink of North Hill and Inglewood, with Sheldon Chernishhenko as Third, Trevor Baker as Second and Kevin Chernishhenko as Lead.
The C Event was won by the Ron Darling rink, with Stan Simpson as Third, Fred Luyten as Second and Garry Rothert as Lead.
Eighteen teams participated in the event.
In addition, the Carstairs Juvenile team participated in the bonspiel. “These young men were very successful,” Roberts said. “They won the C event semifinal game in an extra end and narrowly lost the C Event final in the last end.”
About 100 people sat down for the Saturday night banquet, he added. “The level of curling was very entertaining and we look forward to next year.”
