Carstairs youth faces multiple charges

A 17-year-old Carstairs youth is facing multiple charges, including two counts of breaching his probation, after a rash of incidents last week.

“The youth was a passenger in a car that was passing through the Cremona area on Highway 22 on Jan. 29,” said Sgt. Jeff Jacobson of the Didsbury RCMP. “Shortly before 3 a.m., a police officer attempted to stop the vehicle the youth was travelling in.”

As the officer turned on the lights and attempted to pull over the vehicle, Sgt. Jacobson said, the driver sped away, turning onto Twp. Rd. 303.

“However, the driver overshot the turn, went into the ditch and got stuck.”

In addition to the 21-year-old driver, there were three youths in the vehicle at the time, including two 16-year-olds, from Sundre and Carstairs.

“The 21-year-old driver from Olds is facing charges for impaired operation of a vehicle and flight from police,” said Sgt. Jacobson.

Two days later, the 17-year-old male was involved in a second incident.

“On Jan. 31, police received a call with a report of a break and enter to a residence located on McCrimmon Drive in Carstairs,” he said. “Sometime between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., the suspect gained access through a basement window. The victim – who was in the residence at the time of the incident - reported a theft of a computer, a purse, an iPad, an Xbox and some clothing.”

Ultimately, Sgt. Jacobson said, a search of another residence was conducted in Carstairs and the 17-year-old youth and a variety of stolen items were located there, including the identification of the victim.

After the arrest, on January 31 between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., police received a report of a theft from a vehicle parked on Osler Street in Carstairs. “A wallet, a 10-inch sub-woofer and clothing had been stolen from the vehicle,” said Sgt. Jacobson. “While we were conducting the search initially at the residence, we located the wallet. The youth was wearing some of the clothing from that vehicle upon his arrest.”

The youth faces additional charges, including break and enter to a dwelling, theft and three counts of possession of stolen property.

“The youth was subsequently remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear in court on February 2 in Calgary,” he added. “We are continuing to investigate and we haven't ruled out that other individuals were involved.”

None of the electronics have been recovered at this point in time, he added.
