Library offers helpful programs
During 2011, Carstairs and area residents of all ages participated in a variety of programs and special events that enriched their lives in many ways.
A new program being offered at the library this year is Parent Conversations which is an informal, open venue where parents can get together to learn, share and refine their parenting skills. Each month a different topic is chosen and parents, together with trained facilitators Mia Hanna and Janet Cornell, delve into the quagmire of struggles parents may experience, providing real skills and strategies for addressing their child’s undesirable behaviours or attitudes. Topics range from blended families and divorce to general parenting questions like homework, sibling rivalry, eating healthy and more. Participants will hear from other parents with similar struggles and most of all brainstorm ways to help solve common issues, big (or small) that drive parents crazy! The program runs the last Wednesday of each month from 7-9 p.m. Refreshments are provided, along with library resources and materials relating to topics discussed.
Topic for the Feb. 29 meeting is: Parenting 911! Ask any and all parenting questions.
March topic is: Cyberbullying/Internet and Social Networking Challenges/Privacy Issues between parents and kids. How to navigate Facebook, MySpace, Chat Rooms and Internet with your child.
April topic is: Divorce Question and Answer: Guest speaker is a family and divorce lawyer.
Other library programs include: Rhyme Time, storytime, needlecrafts and book clubs.
On Feb. 28 we have an exciting program for teens challenging them to create the tallest structure out of an edible “surprise material” that the library is supplying.
