Redhawks start 2012 on the road with two losses

The Carstairs Redhawks started 2012 with a road trip to the Edmonton area.

On Jan. 6, the Redhawks travelled to Fort Saskatchewan to play the Chiefs.

Only 12 players and two goaltenders were able to make the trip.

Jasen Kipling got the start in net, and due to the shortage of players, backup goaltender Kyle Siedel dressed as a forward.

The Chiefs started the game quickly, with Jamie Marshall and Trevor Kordyban scoring in the first two minutes to give Fort Saskatchewan a 2-0 lead.

The Redhawks then regrouped, and the play was much more even through the remainder of the period.

Jasen Kipling finished with 14 saves in the period, while Dave Tetrault made nine for the Chiefs.

The second period was 20 minutes of end-to-end action. Only the Chiefs managed to convert any opportunities though, with Dan McPherson, Jamie Marshall and Richard Kelly scoring goals to give Fort Saskatchewan a 5-0 lead after two periods. Jasen Kipling made 17 saves for the Redhawks, and Dave Tetrault 20 saves for the Chiefs.

Fort Saskatchewan stepped up their play in the third period, and put 24 shots on net. However, Jasen Kipling was equal to the task, turning them all aside. Seven minutes into the period Clark Lowry scored to make it a 5-1 game. Andrew Mackenzie and Jason Nopper got the assists. Unfortunately, that was the only shot to beat the Chiefs netminder.

Jasen Kipling was selected as the Redhawks’ player of the game, stopping 55 of 60 shots he faced. Jamie Marshall was the Chiefs’ player of the game, scoring two goals.

On Jan. 7, the Redhawks travelled to Stony Plain to play the Eagles. Kyle Siedel got the start in net.

The Redhawks got off to a slow start once again, and the Eagles capitalized with three goals in the first five minutes. With three minutes left in the period, the Eagles scored again to increase their lead to 4-0.

Marco Scheiwiller replied for the Redhawks a minute later, set up by Dale Kindlein. Kyle Siedel made 16 saves in the period, while Clayton Wilburn made seven in net for the Eagles.

The second period was evenly matched. The only goal came with seven minutes left in the period, when the Eagles increased their lead to 5-1. Both goaltenders had 10 saves in the period.

The Redhawks’ Andrew Buote scored early in the third period to cut the Eagles’ lead to 5-2. Assists went to Andrew Mackenzie and Dave Yuris. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Redhawks would come.

The Eagles scored five more goals in the period before Thomas Allin replied for the Redhawks with less than one minute remaining. The final score was 10-3 for the Eagles. Kyle Siedel finished with 39 saves in net for the Redhawks, while Clayton Wilburn had 24 in net for the Eagles. Jason Nopper was selected as player of the game for Carstairs, while Blair Zahara was picked for Stony Plain.

Next weekend the Redhawks play in Sylvan Lake on Friday evening (8:30 p.m. start), and then host the Bentley Generals at home on Saturday (7:30 p.m. start). Saturday’s game is the Redhawks’ final regular season home game, so they hope to have all their fans in attendance to cheer them on.
